The South Coast Bikes System
Every bike we receive goes through our system. This is what we'll do to your bike
First:
  • Put it in the stand.
  • Check tyres. If ok and not clearly punctured fully inflate.
  • Give it a whirl (where possible) Lube all points. Assess any major wear, damaged or seized components.
  • Remove any broken/superfluous fittings or accessories.
  • Spin the wheels. Check condition and for buckles, broken spokes, truness etc., assess hubs.
  • Check headset and bottom bracket.
  • Attempt to operate the gears and brakes.
  • Any other business.
At this point if you're waiting for a final quote or we find anything extra we'll get in touch.
Next, If needed:
  • Remove the chain.
  • Remove damaged/worn/seized cables and brake pads.
  • Remove the wheels.
  • Remove chainrings/cranks
  • Remove/Overhaul derailleurs, shifters, levers, brake arms/springs/parts.
  • Adjust/Overhaul/Replace headset, bottom bracket.
  • Check/Secure/Replace any extra fittings, racks, mudguards etc.
Once we know nothing else is coming off the bike we clean the frame and components. It's essential for the smooth running of your bike. We always clean by hand, using a biodegradable citrus degreaser and no water.
We'll also remove any rust spots, paint marks and scratches where possible.
Then:
  • If needed, repair punctures/replace tubes, replace tyres/wheels.
  • If needed, adjust/overhaul hubs, replace spokes, true wheels.
  • Fit any new major components.
  • Refit any removed components.
  • Fit any new cables or brake blocks.
  • Refit wheels if removed/replaced.
  • Refit/Replace chain if removed.
  • If wished/needed replace pedals, saddle, grips, tape.
  • Fit any accessories/extras/lights.
And to finish
  • Check/secure handlebars/stem/headset/seat post/saddle.
  • Check/adjust operation of gears.
  • Check/adjust brakes
  • Road Test.
  • Adjust saddle/handlebars on delivery if required.
All of this can take from less than an hour to several hours. When it's done your bike will purr.
Thoughts:
  • This is a generalisation, every job is different and we're not working on a conveyor belt here. We adapt to your requirements and budget.
  • Please! Don't read this and think - 'that must take forever/cost a fortune'. There are a lot of - 'if needed's' in there for a reason. When you do something a lot you get very efficient at it.
  • Haven't mentioned three speeds, suspension, forks, disc brakes, handlebar conversions, wheel building, resprays etc. We do it all.
  • For any purists out there wanting to pick this into pieces. I know some jobs would necessitate a different order.
"You should add 'compassionate' to your 'friendly local' definition. My trusty old bike had been so scorned and derided until the day South Coast Mobile Bikes arrived, smiled and treated its well travelled parts to some expert care. We'll be back!"
